The ijazah — what it means and what it doesn't
Between honour and responsibility. A short primer on the connected chain of recitation and the weight it carries.
An ijazah is not a certificate on a wall. It is a permission — the permission to say that you received the Quran from your teacher, who received it from his, all the way back to the Prophet ﷺ.
It is granted only after the student has recited the entire Quran to the teacher, from memory, with tajweed, without significant error. This is not a small thing. It is often the work of years.
But the ijazah is not the goal. It is a door. What matters is what you do after — who you teach, how you teach, and whether the chain you carry remains alive through you.
Be careful of the ijazah that is given quickly. Some are honourable; some are hollow. Ask what was recited, how it was recited, and over how many months.
