Beginning hifz as an adult

The Book does not close its door on any age. A quiet, honest look at starting memorization when life is already full.

Beginning hifz as an adult

There is a quiet fear that greets many adults when they first think about memorising the Quran. It sounds like a task for children — those with empty hours and unhurried minds. But the door of the Book has never been closed to anyone who knocks on it with sincerity.

Begin small. A single line a day, held steady for a year, will change your life. The mistake most beginners make is to reach too far on the first day and, when the pages resist, to conclude that the Book has resisted them.

Attach your memorization to a fixed time. After Fajr is a mercy for many; the mind is soft and the world has not yet asked anything of you. Others find their moment before sleep. What matters is that the time returns to you every day, without negotiation.

Revise more than you memorise. The old pages are the real ones. New pages, without revision, are borrowed — they leave as quietly as they came.

And when a bad week comes — and it will — do not leave. Sit with the Book even if you only listen. The relationship is what you are building; the memorization is what grows out of it.
