Choosing a Quran teacher

Not every voice you follow leads somewhere. Practical guidance on finding a teacher whose recitation — and character — you can trust.

Choosing a Quran teacher

Ask about the chain. A teacher who has an ijazah has, at some point in his life, sat before another teacher and been corrected letter by letter. This matters. Recitation is a relationship, and relationships must be inherited.

Listen to the recitation before you listen to the lecture. A skilled speaker is not the same as a skilled reciter. Your ear will tell you the difference within a few minutes.

Watch how the teacher treats mistakes — not only yours, but their own. A teacher who never says 'I do not know' is not a safe teacher.

And ask yourself, quietly: do I want to become more like this person? The Book is transmitted through people. Some of what you learn will not be spoken.
